Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is a small settlement in southern Egypt known almost entirely for two ancient temples carved into a sandstone cliff. Built for Pharaoh Ramesses II and Queen Nefertari, the temples are fronted by enormous seated statues and richly decorated interiors. The entire complex was moved to higher ground in the twentieth century to protect it from the rising waters of the large reservoir created by the Aswan dam.

The destination is highly focused: most visitors come to see the temples and understand their scale, symbolism and remarkable relocation. The remote desert setting and wide lake increase their visual impact, particularly in the softer light of morning. There is little conventional town life or broad sightseeing programme, so the strength of the town rests on the exceptional importance of this single archaeological complex.
