OVERVIEW
Kano is one of northern Nigeria’s oldest cities, with a historic core of markets, mosques and traditional compounds enclosed partly by surviving walls. Trade in textiles, leather and agricultural goods remains central, while the famous dye pits preserve techniques associated with centuries of regional commerce. The transition between neighbourhoods and port is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Current security conditions require reliable local guidance, although the city’s cultural and economic importance is substantial. Markets and workshops offer the clearest understanding of how centuries of regional trade continue within a rapidly changing metropolis. Routes through mosques lead naturally towards markets, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
