OVERVIEW
Abuja is Nigeria’s planned capital, built in the centre of the country to replace the crowded coastal city of Lagos as the seat of government. Its broad roads, landscaped districts and modern public buildings are arranged around prominent granite hills and exposed rock formations. The national mosque, national church and government complex provide the main civic landmarks, while newer residential and commercial areas continue to expand rapidly.
The city is organised more by districts and road networks than by a walkable historic centre. Restaurants, parks, markets and nightlife are spread across several areas, and the surrounding hills provide some of the clearest views of the capital’s layout. The city offers a different picture of Nigerian urban life from older, denser cities: more planned and spacious, but also more dependent on organised transport.

THINGS TO DO
Spend an evening in Abuja
Spend an evening around Abuja’s main evening district, choosing venues that fit the local scene rather than assuming every district offers the same atmosphere. Opening nights and late transport can vary.
Explore Thought Pyramid Art Centre
Focus on Thought Pyramid Art Centre for a collection that adds real context to Abuja. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Look closely at Millennium Tower for a concrete introduction to Abuja’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
