Agadez is an historic city in central Niger, established on trade routes crossing the Sahara. Its old quarter is built largely from earth, with narrow streets, traditional houses and a distinctive mosque whose tall mud-brick minaret dominates the skyline. Markets and craft traditions reflect the city’s long connection with Tuareg communities, camel caravans and exchange between North and West Africa.

The city’s importance comes from its role as a desert meeting point rather than from a long list of monuments. Architecture, metalwork, leather goods and local customs provide insight into Saharan life, while the surrounding landscape begins close to the urban edge. Severe security risks currently affect much of Niger, and official travel advice should be treated as essential before considering any journey.
