OVERVIEW
Jackson Hole is a long mountain valley in north western Wyoming, enclosed by the Teton and Gros Ventre ranges. Ranches, rivers and small settlements occupy the valley floor, while ski areas and protected landscapes rise along the edges. Jackson serves as the main commercial centre, with valley floor and wildlife habitats providing the wider context. Beyond the central area, wildlife habitats and river continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Wildlife, skiing and scenic drives are central, but distances and seasonal traffic require planning. Different parts of the valley feel markedly different, from developed resort zones to quiet ranch country. Staying near the preferred activities reduces daily travel. Time spent around mountain terrain also brings river into view, adding a different layer to the visit.

Build a manageable drive through Jackson Hole’s mountain roads, allowing for stops and slower roads. In a destination as spread out as Jackson Hole, choose a route that works from your base.
Road Trips
Half or full day
Choose terrain at Jackson Hole’s principal ski area that matches your ability. Operating dates, lift access and snow quality depend on the season and conditions, so check the current report before travelling.
Look for wildlife around National Museum of Wildlife
Look for wildlife around National Museum of Wildlife Art with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed.
