iSimangaliso is a large wetland and coastal region in north eastern South Africa. Lakes, mangroves, dune forest, grassland and coral reefs support hippos, crocodiles, elephants, turtles and abundant birdlife. Small towns and lodges provide access to separate sections of the protected area. Across the wider area, forest remains closely connected with mangroves, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.
Boat trips, game drives and beach visits reveal very different ecosystems. Distances are considerable, so choosing one or two sectors is more practical than attempting the entire region. Seasonal turtle nesting and whale migration add further wildlife interest. Routes through wetlands lead naturally towards mangroves, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
