OVERVIEW
The Drakensberg is a long mountain range of steep cliffs, high plateaux and deeply cut valleys in eastern South Africa. Waterfalls descend from the escarpment, while lower slopes contain grassland, farms and small resort areas. Numerous rock shelters preserve paintings created by San communities over thousands of years.
Walking ranges from gentle valley routes to demanding ascents onto exposed high ground. Weather changes rapidly, and some passes require guides or technical confidence. Horse riding, birdwatching and cultural sites broaden the experience, while the sheer scale of the escarpment rewards staying in more than one section.
