OVERVIEW
Durban stretches along the Indian Ocean around a major harbour, with long beaches, commercial districts and residential areas extending inland. Zulu, Indian and colonial histories have all shaped the city, especially its food, markets and religious architecture. The beachfront remains the most visible public space.
Warm beaches and a long waterfront promenade support an easy coastal stay, while Indian influenced markets and restaurants give the city a distinctive food culture. Heat and humidity are persistent, and some districts require care after dark. The port, subtropical neighbourhoods and nearby inland valleys show a city with far more complexity than a conventional beach resort.
