Iraqi Marshes

Iraqi Marshes are a broad wetland region in southern Iraq, formed by shallow lakes, reed beds and channels between major rivers. Marsh Arab communities have long built reed houses, kept water buffalo and travelled by narrow boats. Much of the wetland was drained in the twentieth century and later partially restored. Beyond the central area, river and lakes continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.

Boat journeys reveal the relationship between settlement, wildlife and water. Birdlife is rich, while local hospitality provides important cultural depth. Current security, water levels and environmental conditions should be checked carefully before travel. Lakes is encountered differently from rivers, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
