OVERVIEW
Baghdad stretches along the Tigris River and has served for centuries as a major centre of government, scholarship and trade. Much of the medieval city has disappeared, but mosques, shrines, markets and historic streets survive among broad modern avenues and dense residential districts. The river remains a central point of orientation in a metropolis shaped by repeated rebuilding.
Bookshops and markets preserve a strong intellectual and commercial tradition, while museums hold important collections from ancient Mesopotamia. Security conditions and movement restrictions have long shaped travel, and the city cannot be approached like a conventional leisure destination. Even so, its cultural weight, food and everyday urban life remain fundamental to understanding modern Iraq.

THINGS TO DO
Browse Baghdad Mall for goods connected to Baghdad, focusing on local makers, produce or established specialities. Check market days and avoid assuming every stall is locally made.
Focus on Baghdadi Museum for a collection that adds real context to Baghdad. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Trace local history at Monument to the Unknown Soldier
Use Monument to the Unknown Soldier to understand a specific part of Baghdad’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
