OVERVIEW
Basra lies near the head of the Persian Gulf, where rivers and canals connect the city with marshes, ports and oil-producing areas. Historically known for date palms and maritime trade, it remains Iraq’s main port and a centre of the energy industry. Dense modern districts, older canals and industrial zones create a varied but heavily pressured urban landscape.
Markets, riverside areas and local food reflect the city’s Gulf connections, but industrial infrastructure and extreme summer heat dominate much of the wider urban experience. Security and entry conditions require current specialist advice. The historic canal-side image survives only in fragments, so expectations should focus on a major working port rather than a preserved heritage destination.

THINGS TO DO
Admire Basrah Adventist church
Look closely at Basrah Adventist church for a concrete introduction to Basra’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Taste local food around Indian market
Use Indian market as a starting point for tasting food connected to Basra, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Trace local history at Basra Memorial
Use Basra Memorial to understand a specific part of Basra’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
