Hargeisa is the largest city in Somaliland, spread across a dry highland valley. Markets, government offices and residential neighbourhoods form a low rise urban landscape, while livestock trade remains important to the economy. Public monuments and cultural institutions reflect a strong local political identity. The destination broadens noticeably where local food gives way to markets beyond the main visitor area.

The central market provides the clearest sense of everyday activity. Food, crafts and conversation reveal more than formal sights alone. Travel requires current local advice, but the city is often calmer than perceptions of the wider region suggest. Residential districts is experienced differently from markets, so both areas contribute useful but separate perspectives.
