OVERVIEW
Djibouti City lies on the Gulf of Tadjoura, with port facilities, government offices and low-rise neighbourhoods spread across a dry coastal plain. French colonial buildings survive in the older centre, while modern development reflects the city’s strategic role in shipping and military logistics. Markets, mosques and seafront roads give the low-rise centre a stronger everyday identity.
Markets and waterfront streets provide the clearest urban interest, while the surrounding region contains volcanic landscapes, salt lakes and strong marine life. Heat is intense for much of the year. The city functions mainly as a base, but its multicultural population and maritime role give it a distinct identity.
