OVERVIEW
Gorongosa is a protected savanna and wetland landscape in central Mozambique. Floodplains, forests, lakes and mountain slopes support elephants, lions, antelope and rich birdlife. Decades of conflict severely reduced wildlife, but long term restoration has rebuilt populations and research capacity. Seasonal water, woodland and open plains create distinct habitats across the protected area. Woodland and wetlands belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Game drives and guided walks reveal a landscape still in active recovery. Wildlife density varies by season and habitat, while community projects form an important part of the park’s future. The combination of conservation, science and visible ecological change makes the experience especially distinctive. Early mornings and late afternoons bring the strongest wildlife activity and the most revealing light.
