OVERVIEW
Liwonde is a protected savanna and river region in southern Malawi, where floodplains, woodland and the Shire River support elephants, hippos and abundant birdlife. Camps and roads are concentrated around a relatively compact area. Beyond the central area, wildlife habitats and elephant habitat continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use. Savanna occupies a different part of the destination from wildlife habitats, giving the wider area a clear physical structure, with wildlife habitats providing an additional point of connection.
Boat trips and game drives reveal different habitats, with the river offering especially strong wildlife encounters. Seasonal changes affect animal movement and vegetation, making longer stays more rewarding than a single short drive. A visit centred only on elephant habitat would overlook woodland, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
