OVERVIEW
Blantyre is Malawi’s main commercial centre, set among green hills in the south of the country. The city grew from a nineteenth-century mission and trading settlement, and a few early churches and civic buildings survive among modern offices, residential districts and markets. Development is spread across several linked neighbourhoods rather than one compact core.
Most visitors use the city as a base for business or travel towards tea estates, mountains and wildlife reserves. Local markets and restaurants show everyday urban life more clearly than formal attractions. The surrounding highlands bring cooler air and greener scenery, but distances between districts make road transport important.

THINGS TO DO
Browse Blantyre’s principal market
Browse Blantyre’s principal market for goods connected to Blantyre, focusing on local makers, produce or established specialities. Check market days and avoid assuming every stall is locally made.
Look for wildlife around Blue Elephant
Look for wildlife around Blue Elephant with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed.
Trace Blantyre’s colonial history
Use Blantyre’s colonial history to understand a specific part of Blantyre’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
