OVERVIEW
The Galápagos Islands are a remote volcanic archipelago in the Pacific, with stark lava fields, highland forests and nutrient rich seas. Giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions and distinctive birds evolved in relative isolation. Only a few islands have permanent settlements, while most visitor sites are strictly controlled.
Wildlife encounters are exceptionally close, but rules and naturalist guides are essential to protect fragile ecosystems. Cruises reach more remote islands, while land based stays provide greater flexibility and local contact. Costs are high, yet the combination of geology, marine life and evolutionary history is unmatched.
