Guayaquil stands beside the Guayas River in western Ecuador, with a major port, commercial centre and sprawling residential districts. Riverfront redevelopment has created promenades, parks and cultural spaces, while older neighbourhoods preserve colourful wooden houses and steep streets. The city is the country’s largest economic centre. Markets occupies a different part of the destination from waterfront, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.

The waterfront is the easiest introduction, especially in the evening. Markets, seafood and neighbourhood food provide stronger local character beyond the formal promenade. Heat and humidity are intense, and careful planning is useful after dark. The relationship between markets and river adds variety without requiring long transfers. Exploration centred only on residential districts would miss markets, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.
