OVERVIEW
Formentera is the smallest inhabited island of the Balearics, reached mainly by ferry from Ibiza. Long beaches, salt flats and low scrub dominate the flat landscape, while villages and beach settlements remain modest in scale. Ses Illetes draws the largest crowds, but the road to La Mola lighthouse reveals a quieter agricultural interior and exposed eastern cliffs.
Cycling and scooters provide easy movement between beaches, salt pans, villages and the two main lighthouses. Summer brings high prices, crowded ferries and busy beach clubs, but evenings become calmer after day visitors return to Ibiza. The island suits swimming and slow coastal exploration more than a dense sightseeing itinerary.
