OVERVIEW
The Danube Delta spreads across a maze of waterways, marshes, reed beds and lakes before the river reaches the Black Sea. Small settlements are connected mainly by boat, while fishing and seasonal flooding shape everyday life. Pelicans, herons and numerous migratory species make the region especially important for birdlife.
Boat journeys reveal narrow channels, open lakes and remote sandbanks that cannot be understood from one base alone. Wildlife viewing is best with quiet local guides rather than fast group excursions. Mosquitoes and seasonal water levels affect comfort, while the remoteness preserves a strong sense of living wetland culture.
