Bucharest is a large capital on the plains of southern Romania, shaped by royal ambition, rapid modernisation and communist redevelopment. Belle Époque houses and Orthodox churches survive beside broad avenues and vast government buildings. The historic centre has become a dense area of restaurants and nightlife, while residential districts extend far beyond it.

Architecture is unusually varied, sometimes within a single street. Small churches and villas appear behind apartment blocks, while grand boulevards, communist era civic buildings and a dense old quarter create abrupt contrasts softened by large parks. Traffic can be tiring, so focusing on one or two districts gives a clearer sense of the city than rushing between landmarks.
