OVERVIEW
The Curonian Spit is a long, slender peninsula of dunes and forest separating a freshwater lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Small fishing villages are spaced along a single road, with colourful wooden houses and traditional boats reflecting older maritime life. Large shifting dunes rise above the southern sections.
Cycling and walking provide the best way to move between forest, beach and lagoon shore. Strong winds continually reshape the sand, while bird migration adds seasonal wildlife interest. The narrow geography is easy to grasp, but summer traffic and limited accommodation make advance planning useful.
