OVERVIEW

Crater Lake occupies the collapsed summit of an ancient volcano in southern Oregon. Steep walls encircle the lake, which has no major rivers flowing in or out and is known for exceptional clarity and colour. A road follows much of the rim, providing viewpoints, trailheads and access to the only boat landing.

Snow closes sections of the rim road for much of the year, making summer the easiest period for full access. Short walks reveal changing views, while longer hikes climb surrounding peaks. The lake is striking from above, but reaching the water requires a steep descent and return.
