OVERVIEW
The Columbia River Gorge cuts through the Cascade Range, forming a long natural corridor between the Pacific coast and the inland plateau. Sheer basalt walls, dense forest and numerous waterfalls line the western section, while the landscape becomes drier and more open farther east. Historic roads, viewpoints and small towns follow both sides of the river.
Short walks reach several major waterfalls, but longer trails climb to exposed ridges and broad river views. Wind supports sailing and windsurfing in the central gorge, while orchards and vineyards add a cultivated element. Traffic and parking can be difficult at the most famous sites, especially on summer weekends.
