OVERVIEW
Bend lies east of the Cascade Mountains, where dry pine forest and high desert meet snow-covered volcanic peaks. The city developed around the Deschutes River and now combines a compact downtown with extensive newer neighbourhoods. Lava fields, lakes, ski slopes and mountain-bike trails lie within easy reach, giving visitors access to several distinct landscapes from one urban base.
Breweries, cafés and riverside parks give the centre a sociable atmosphere after outdoor activities. Summer supports hiking, cycling and paddling, while winter brings skiing in the nearby mountains. Rapid growth has increased traffic and housing costs, but the range of accessible terrain remains the city’s defining advantage.
