OVERVIEW
The Costa del Sol stretches along the Mediterranean shore of southern Spain, with large resort cities, marinas and long beaches backed by mountains. Inland, whitewashed towns climb hills above the coast, while the major city of Málaga provides museums, transport and a historic centre. Dense development dominates many shoreline sections, but older settlements and mountain roads preserve clear regional contrasts.
Beach life, golf and nightlife dominate several resorts, while smaller towns and mountain villages offer a quieter experience. Roads and rail make much of the coast easy to connect, though summer traffic can be heavy. The region works best when one base is chosen rather than treated as a continuous sightseeing route.
