OVERVIEW
Colca Canyon cuts through the high Andes, with steep walls, pre-Hispanic agricultural terraces and villages spread along both rims. Snow-covered volcanoes rise above the valley, while hot springs and colonial churches appear near the main settlements. Andean condors use morning air currents near several viewpoints and are often seen at close range.
Road journeys involve high passes and considerable altitude before reaching the canyon. Day trips provide famous views but leave little time for villages, walks or hot springs, while longer stays reveal the scale more clearly. Hiking to the canyon floor is demanding because of heat, elevation change and steep return climbs.
