OVERVIEW
Chitwan protects a mosaic of tall grass, river channels and dense sal forest in the subtropical plains of southern Nepal. Greater one-horned rhinoceroses are frequently seen, while the area also supports elephants, crocodiles, deer, sloth bears and a small tiger population. Villages and lodges line the park boundary, particularly near the main eastern entrance.
Jeep drives, canoe trips and guided walks reveal different habitats, with early mornings offering the best wildlife activity. Rhino sightings are far more likely than tiger encounters, and responsible operators avoid direct disturbance. Heat, dust and seasonal river levels affect conditions, while local Tharu communities add cultural context beyond the park.
