Central Kalahari

The Central Kalahari is an immense protected landscape of dry grassland, low dunes and ancient riverbeds in the interior of Botswana. Wildlife is widely dispersed for much of the year, but seasonal rains draw antelope, predators and large numbers of birds into open valleys. Campsites are unfenced and infrastructure is extremely limited.

Self-drive travel requires high-clearance vehicles, fuel reserves and careful navigation across deep sand. The reward is unusual solitude, with few other vehicles and long periods of uninterrupted landscape. Animal sightings can be less predictable than in river-based reserves, but the scale, silence and night skies provide an experience rarely found in more developed safari areas.
