OVERVIEW
Cape Coast is a coastal town built around a large former trading castle overlooking the Gulf of Guinea. The fortress and nearby sites document the transatlantic slave trade, while dense streets, markets and fishing communities show the town’s continuing everyday life. Hills rise quickly behind the coast, giving the centre a tightly packed form.
The castle visit is emotionally demanding and central to understanding the town. Fishing canoes, nets and shoreline markets provide a vivid contrast with the formal museum spaces. Nearby rainforest reserves and other forts broaden the regional context, but the town itself is best approached with time for both historical reflection and ordinary street life.
