OVERVIEW
Accra is Ghana’s capital, spreading along the Atlantic coast and inland across a rapidly growing urban area. Colonial forts, independence monuments and older trading quarters provide historical reference points, while large markets, busy commercial roads and newer residential districts show the scale of the modern city. Beaches and fishing communities remain part of the urban landscape, though the city is not organised around one compact waterfront centre.
Much of the city’s appeal comes from current culture rather than monumental sightseeing. Music venues, galleries, fashion, restaurants and street food provide many of the strongest experiences, while museums and memorials explain Ghana’s political history and role in the Atlantic slave trade. The city is spread out and traffic can shape the day, so choosing a few neighbourhoods is more useful than trying to cover everything at once.
