OVERVIEW
Bunaken lies just offshore from the city of Manado and forms part of a protected marine park. The island is low and inhabited, with simple villages, mangroves and small resorts along the coast. Beneath the water, reefs drop sharply into deep channels, supporting turtles, reef fish and varied coral life.
Most visits revolve around diving and snorkelling from boats, as currents and reef walls require local knowledge. Beaches are narrow and tidal rather than broad resort sands. Village life, seaweed farming and small homestays give the island a practical local character, while nearby islands offer different underwater conditions.
