OVERVIEW
Bratislava stands on the Danube near the meeting point of several national borders. Its historic centre contains pastel façades, courtyards and civic buildings below a large castle overlooking the river. Communist-era housing districts and modern office developments spread well beyond the old town, revealing a much larger city than the central core suggests.
The castle hill and compact old town can be explored in a few hours, which explains the city’s popularity as a day trip. Staying longer allows time for the riverfront, modernist neighbourhoods and local markets beyond the busiest streets. The scale is manageable, but the contrast between historic core and socialist era districts gives the city more depth than a quick visit suggests.
