OVERVIEW
Banská Štiavnica lies in a volcanic landscape in central Slovakia, where centuries of silver and gold mining shaped the town and surrounding hills. The compact centre climbs across steep slopes, with churches, civic buildings and former mining institutions arranged around small squares. Artificial reservoirs built for mining now form a network of lakes in the nearby countryside.
Mining history is visible both underground and in the landscape, from old shafts to engineered water systems. Cafés, galleries and restored houses bring new life to the centre without erasing its slightly worn character. Walking between the upper and lower streets requires effort, but the changing views and close relationship with the hills are central to the experience.

THINGS TO DO
Focus on The Calvary for a collection that adds real context to Banská Štiavnica. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Admire The Knocking Tower
Look closely at The Knocking Tower for a concrete introduction to Banská Štiavnica’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at The Old Castle
Use The Old Castle to understand a specific part of Banská Štiavnica’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
