OVERVIEW

Brasília was built in the late 1950s on a high plateau to serve as Brazil’s new capital. Its central plan separates government, business, residential and cultural functions into distinct zones connected by broad roads. Sculptural buildings by Oscar Niemeyer define the ceremonial core, while planned residential blocks contain schools, shops and green courtyards.
