OVERVIEW
Ouro Preto is a historic town in south eastern Brazil, built across steep hills with churches, civic buildings and former mining houses tightly packed along narrow streets. Gold wealth shaped its architecture and colonial importance. Beyond the central area, port and architecture continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use. Architecture and port belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Walking is demanding because of the slopes, but viewpoints and church interiors reward slow exploration. Museums and nearby mines add context to the labour and extraction behind the town’s beauty. Churches provides the most immediate experience, while central streets offers a quieter and more local perspective. Exploring beyond central streets reveals churches, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.

THINGS TO DO
Focus on Praça Tiradentes for a collection that adds real context to Ouro Preto. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Trace Ouro Preto’s colonial history
Use Ouro Preto’s colonial history to understand a specific part of Ouro Preto’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Admire Museu da Inconfidência
Look closely at Museu da Inconfidência for a concrete introduction to Ouro Preto’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
