OVERVIEW
Bonaire is a small Caribbean island with a dry landscape, low hills and extensive coral reefs close to shore. The main town, Kralendijk, provides restaurants, shops and a colourful waterfront, while salt pans and bright pink lagoons dominate the south. Much of the coast is protected as a marine park.
Divers can enter the water from dozens of marked roadside sites, making independent shore diving unusually convenient. Flamingos gather around wetlands and salt ponds, while the rugged north contains cactus scrub, cliffs and quiet bays. Beaches are generally small and rocky, so the island is better known for underwater access than conventional resort sand.
