OVERVIEW

Curaçao is a dry southern Caribbean island with a deeply indented coast, low hills and a capital built around a natural harbour. Dutch colonial architecture, pastel façades and fortifications define the historic centre, while beaches and residential areas are scattered across the island. The interior supports cactus, scrub and salt flats rather than tropical rainforest.

Shore diving is especially strong because reefs lie close to many beaches. Food and language reflect African, European and Latin American influences, giving the island a culture distinct from conventional resort destinations. A car is useful for reaching smaller coves and inland landscapes beyond the capital.
