OVERVIEW
Morrocoy is a protected coastal region in northern Venezuela, with mangroves, wetlands and small coral islands scattered across shallow water. Mainland towns provide the main services, while boats connect the beaches and cays. Fishing communities and wetland habitats give the wider area more depth than the beach cays alone. The destination is physically divided between beaches and mangroves, with roads and settlements linking the two.
Boat trips, snorkelling and beach time provide the principal appeal. Current travel conditions should be checked carefully, while responsible operators help protect fragile marine habitats. Coast is encountered differently from islands, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Conditions around coast can differ noticeably from beaches, so flexible timing improves the overall experience, with islands providing an additional point of connection.
