OVERVIEW
Bhubaneswar is a rapidly expanding city in eastern India with an old temple quarter at its historic core. Hundreds of stone shrines once stood here, and several major examples survive around sacred ponds and narrow lanes. Beyond this area, a twentieth-century planned city of broad roads and government districts has grown into a large technology and education centre.
Religious life remains visible in daily routines, especially around the main temples and water tanks. Craft traditions, regional cooking and nearby Buddhist and Jain sites broaden the cultural picture. The modern city is spread out, so the contrast between the compact sacred quarter and newer districts is more important than any single central square.

THINGS TO DO
Visit Muktesvara Temple with attention to its continuing religious meaning as well as its architecture or history. Dress and behave respectfully, and expect access to change during services.
Look closely at Lingaraja Temple for a concrete introduction to Bhubaneswar’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Rameshwar Temple
Use Rameshwar Temple to understand a specific part of Bhubaneswar’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
