OVERVIEW
Puri is a large town on India’s eastern coast, centred on a major Hindu temple and a dense network of markets, lodging and residential streets. Religious festivals draw immense crowds throughout the year. The temple’s kitchens, processions and surrounding market streets support a complex religious economy serving pilgrims throughout the year. Dense lodging districts spread inland from the temple and beach.
Pilgrimage is the defining experience, while beach activity and local food provide a separate coastal rhythm. Access rules around the temple require awareness and respect. The annual chariot festival transforms the main avenue, drawing enormous crowds and giving public ritual an exceptional scale. Traditional painting and appliqué workshops flourish in nearby craft communities.
