OVERVIEW

Bodh Gaya is a small town in eastern India where Siddhartha Gautama is believed to have attained enlightenment. The Mahabodhi Temple stands beside the descendant of the sacred fig tree associated with that event, drawing pilgrims from across the Buddhist world. Monasteries built by different countries surround the main religious complex.

Daily life centres on prayer, meditation and ritual movement around the temple grounds. Chanting, lamps and groups of monks create an atmosphere unlike that of a conventional heritage town. Streets outside the sacred area are busy and uneven, but the concentration of international monasteries makes the town a rare meeting point for many Buddhist traditions.
