OVERVIEW
Banff covers a broad section of the Canadian Rockies centred on a small resort town and a network of valleys, lakes and high mountain roads. Turquoise lakes, glaciers and limestone peaks define the scenery, while wildlife remains common in forested areas. The town provides the main concentration of accommodation, restaurants and services within the protected landscape.
Some of the best-known viewpoints are reached by road, but walking trails reveal quieter lakes, waterfalls and alpine meadows beyond the busy stops. Seasonal conditions strongly affect access to higher routes. The region is highly developed for visitors, yet strict park management and large wilderness areas preserve a clear sense of scale beyond the main corridors.
