OVERVIEW
Banc d'Arguin is a large protected coastal region in Mauritania where the Sahara reaches a broad zone of islands, mudflats and shallow sea. The nutrient-rich waters support dolphins, fish and one of the world’s largest concentrations of migratory shorebirds. Small Imraguen fishing communities live along the coast using traditional methods adapted to the difficult environment.
Boat journeys and guided coastal travel offer the best chance to understand the reserve, especially its vast bird colonies and shallow marine habitats. Facilities are extremely limited, distances are substantial and conditions can be harsh. Visits depend on specialist logistics and respectful arrangements with Imraguen fishing communities.
