OVERVIEW
Nouakchott is a large coastal capital built across flat desert terrain, with markets, government districts and residential areas spreading far beyond the original centre. Rapid migration has transformed its scale, producing a sprawling urban landscape with few clear boundaries. Markets and residential quarters continue to expand across the surrounding desert edge. Markets and central streets belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Fish markets and everyday commerce provide the strongest sense of place. Heat, distance and current security conditions require careful planning. Desert terrain provides the most immediate experience, while residential districts offers a quieter and more local perspective. Markets is encountered differently from residential districts, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
