OVERVIEW
Bacalar is a small town in southern Mexico beside a narrow freshwater lagoon known for striking changes in colour. Wooden piers, lakeside guesthouses and public swimming areas line parts of the shore, while the compact centre contains a fort, simple restaurants and residential streets. The water, rather than the town’s architecture, is the main reason for visiting.
Kayaking, sailing and swimming reveal shallow sandbanks, deeper channels and clear spring-fed areas across the lagoon. Development has grown quickly, but the atmosphere remains less urban than larger coastal resorts. Protecting the fragile water system is increasingly important, and visitors are encouraged to avoid products or activities that damage the lagoon’s natural balance.
