OVERVIEW
Ambergris Caye is a long, narrow island off the coast of Belize, separated from the mainland by shallow Caribbean water. Its main town is the country’s busiest island tourism centre, with restaurants, small hotels, dive shops and golf carts filling sandy streets. The Belize Barrier Reef lies just offshore, providing easy access to coral gardens, marine reserves and some of the region’s best-known diving.
The island combines a social, developed centre with quieter stretches farther north and south. Snorkelling and diving are the primary reasons to visit, but fishing, sailing and relaxed waterfront evenings broaden the experience. Beaches are not uniformly wide or undeveloped, so the reef and water activities matter more than a conventional resort shoreline. Golf carts and boats are the main ways to move around.
