Hopkins is a small coastal village in southern Belize, with sandy roads, guesthouses and homes spread along a narrow beach. The community is strongly associated with Garifuna music, food and language. Mangroves, rivers and forested mountains lie close inland, while the barrier reef is reached by boat. The transition between mangroves and river is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.

Drumming, local cooking and cultural visits provide important depth beyond beach time. Snorkelling, diving and inland excursions are easy to arrange from the village. Facilities remain modest, preserving a more local atmosphere than larger resort centres. The relationship between forest and mangroves becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
