OVERVIEW
Avignon stands beside the Rhône River in southern France, enclosed by extensive medieval walls. Its main landmark is the vast palace built when the papacy was based here during the fourteenth century, accompanied by churches, narrow streets and a famous bridge extending into the river. The old city remains a functioning centre with shops, homes, markets and public squares.
The annual arts festival transforms streets and courtyards into performance spaces, but local life remains active outside the event period. Cafés and restaurants occupy shaded squares, while quieter lanes reveal domestic architecture behind the major monuments. The city also provides a practical base for nearby villages and vineyards, though its own concentrated heritage rewards time beyond a quick visit.

THINGS TO DO
Taste wine around Avignon Fair
Taste wine around Avignon Fair with enough time to understand its connection to Avignon’s soils, grape varieties and producers. Check opening days and transport before visiting several cellars.
Experience Theatre Festival
Theatre Festival is a scheduled event rather than a year-round attraction. Check the current dates, programme and ticket arrangements before building the rest of the trip around it.
Festivals
Half or full day
Look closely at Papal Palace for a concrete introduction to Avignon’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Pont Saint-Bénezet
Use Pont Saint-Bénezet to understand a specific part of Avignon’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
