OVERVIEW
Aix-en-Provence is a historic city in southern France, set inland between Mediterranean plains and low mountains. Its centre is known for pale stone buildings, tree-lined avenues, small squares and numerous fountains, with markets and cafés woven into everyday streets. Former town houses and churches reflect its long role as a regional capital, while the surrounding countryside is closely associated with the painter Paul Cézanne.
Markets, cafés and museums give the centre an easy daily rhythm, while shaded squares and residential streets reward unhurried walking. Summer can be hot and crowded, especially during festivals. The surrounding countryside is associated with Cézanne, vineyards and limestone hills, but the city itself has enough architecture, food and cultural life for a standalone stay.
